At Berry Brow Infant & Nursery Academy, we strive for all of our children to become confident, resilient mathematicians and successful problem solvers. We believe that every child can achieve in mathematics through high-quality teaching, practical experiences and a positive attitude towards learning.
From Nursery through to Year 2, our mathematics curriculum is carefully sequenced using the White Rose Maths programme. This provides a clear progression of knowledge and skills, ensuring children build on what they already know and are well prepared for the next stage of their learning.
In our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children develop a secure understanding of number, counting, patterns, shape, space and measure through purposeful play, exploration and practical activities. They are encouraged to talk about their mathematical thinking and apply their understanding in real-life contexts.
As children move into Key Stage 1, they continue to build on these strong foundations through the White Rose Maths curriculum. Lessons develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills, enabling children to make connections between mathematical concepts and apply their learning with increasing confidence.
Across the school, we teach mathematics using the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) approach. Children first explore concepts using practical resources (concrete), before representing their understanding through pictures and diagrams (pictorial), and finally moving on to calculations and representations using numbers and symbols (abstract). This approach helps children develop a deep understanding of mathematics, enabling them to reason, explain their thinking and solve problems in a variety of ways.
Our aim is for every child to leave Berry Brow with a secure mathematical understanding, confidence in their own abilities and the skills they need to succeed in the next stage of their education and beyond.

Maths
At Berry Brow Infant & Nursery Academy we strive for all our children to become successful problem solvers and resilient mathematicians. We want the children to have a strong and secure mathematical knowledge that will give them the foundations for later life. To do this we use the Concrete Pictorial Abstract (CPA) approach to teach mathematical concepts. This enables children to solve problems in a variety of ways. By following the stages of CPA the children develop a deep understanding that they can reason with and explain.
