At Berry Brow Infant & Nursery Academy, we are passionate about developing curious, confident young scientists who are eager to explore and understand the world around them. From our Nursery children through to Year 2, we provide practical and engaging science experiences that inspire children to ask questions, investigate ideas and develop a lifelong love of learning.
Our science curriculum follows the National Curriculum and is carefully sequenced to ensure knowledge and skills are built progressively from the Early Years Foundation Stage into Key Stage 1. In EYFS, children begin by exploring the natural world through play, observation and first-hand experiences. They develop curiosity about plants, animals, seasonal change, materials and their environment, laying the foundations for future scientific learning. As children move into Key Stage 1, this knowledge is developed further.
To support high-quality teaching and learning, we use the Developing Experts programme, which provides engaging lessons, rich scientific vocabulary and opportunities for children to think and work like scientists. The programme helps children make meaningful links between scientific concepts while developing their understanding through practical enquiry, discussion and investigation.
At Berry Brow, we believe that science is not simply about finding the correct answer. Instead, it is about developing the skills and processes needed to observe, predict, question, investigate, reason and draw conclusions from evidence. Children are encouraged to become confident problem-solvers and critical thinkers who are unafraid to ask questions, challenge ideas and explain their thinking using scientific language.
Scientific enquiry is at the heart of our curriculum. Across every year group, children take part in a wide range of practical investigations that allow them to make observations, carry out simple tests, identify patterns, classify objects and gather evidence to answer their own questions. These hands-on experiences ensure that children develop both a broad knowledge of scientific concepts and a deeper understanding of how science works in the real world.
We are proud to extend children’s scientific learning beyond the classroom through our strong links with Newsome Junior Academy. Through Forest School experiences and outdoor learning opportunities, children develop a deeper appreciation of the natural environment, their local area and the wider world. These sessions nurture resilience, curiosity and respect for nature while helping children understand how science is all around them. By exploring woodland habitats, observing seasonal changes and investigating the living world first-hand, our children develop a genuine love of the outdoors and an understanding of their immediate environment.
Our ambition is that every child leaves Berry Brow Infant & Nursery Academy as an inquisitive, knowledgeable and enthusiastic young scientist, equipped with the confidence, vocabulary and investigative skills to continue their scientific journey beyond Key Stage 1.

Science
At Berry Brow Infant & Nursery Academy, we teach science in a way that ensures children have a concrete understanding of chemistry, biology, physics and geology. We believe science is not about having the right answer but instead is about a set of processes and skills which allow us to better understand, question and reason with the world around us. Our science curriculum follows the national curriculum and is progressive throughout the school so that each topic and skill can be built upon one year after another. In each year group there are a variety of investigations which involve tangible experiences that teach the children a range of scientific enquiry skills. We have constructed our curriculum, not only for the children to have a breadth of knowledge, but to have the depth also.
